About Us

Welcome to Emporia’s K – 12 Charter School; we are both innovative and non-traditional. Turning Point Academy offers educational choices and flexibility that customizes education for every student. We offer a K-12 Virtual Program, as well as K-4, 5-8, and 9-12 Face2Face Programs to best meet the needs of our families.

Our philosophy is learning can occur at any time and place and quality learning happens in both an individual and social context. The personal touch means so much in a child’s educational experience and Turning Point staff understands that each child is unique. Each student’s individual learning needs factor in to the educational goals and outcomes for which  both the student and staff share responsibility.

Turning Point Academy
201516 Application
About us
As Emporia’s school of choice, Turning Point Academy offers a unique learning environment for
eager self directed learners who would like to participate in crafting their own learning
opportunities. The Face 2 Face (f2f) Program emphasizes the development of 21
st Century skills in an
increasingly digital and global environment. Through the use of Project Based Learning (PBL) and
innovative technologies, students are truly engaged in learning required content and skills. Complex,
authentic questions and carefully designed products and tasks help to highlight the excitement
generated in students.
Using PBL
Turning Point Academy directly involves students in their own education with projects that integrate
curriculum areas, thematic instruction, and community issues. By understanding the four walls of a
school are no longer the limits of an education. Students are developing lifelong habits important for
career development and success through a creative, collaborative and communicative learning
environment. Through utilizing their learning styles in their projects, students learn how to plan, set
goals, communicate with others, and become better problem solvers. Our students truly learn to be
lifelong learners.
Family Involvement
Turning Point Academy believes a collaborative partnership between family, school, and community
is essential for student success. Family participation is a fundamental piece of this support system.
Communication between school, family, and the larger community is top priority in the complete
education of our global citizens.

May 1, 2015
Applications turned in after May 1 will be reviewed based on availability.
The purpose of Turning Point Academy is to provide an education environment for students who need
a smaller learning group, fewer transitions from schooltoschool and teachertoteacher, and more
kinesthetic learning opportunities than can be created in the traditional school environment. Student
application status will be determined based upon criteria described in the charter, enrollment
limitations and staff input.
The application process requires families to:
1. Complete Application Paperwork, including parent and student essays and two recent teacher
recommendation (past 12 years only, please)
2. Student shadow of ½ day
3. Participate in a Family Interview
*(requirements are subject to be waived by an administrator)
Late Applications
Families applying to Turning Point after May 1 will be considered “late applicants” and will be
admitted only if:
1) There is space for the student
2) It is determined that the applicant is a suitable match for the school,
In the event the school receives more applications than there are spaces, the staff will evaluate the
candidates based on their need for a nontraditional schooling environment, to include in part learning
styles, social skills, and growth potential.
Waiting List
After all positions are filled for the current year, a waiting list will be started. If a position opens, it will

Forms and emails will soon be sent out to parents/guardians. Students are expected to attend, as these are normally student-led, and teacher-substituted.
